Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. It commemorates U.S. military personnel who died in service to their country. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in battle. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in military service.

The holiday is celebrated with parades, picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays and other public gatherings. It is also customary for politicians to make speeches honoring those who have died in military service.[1] Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day weekend to lay flowers or flags at gravesites or statues.

As we observe Memorial Day, we remember the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives in defense of our nation. We honor them for their service, and we pledge to continue their work of defending our country and its citizens. This holiday is a time for reflection and remembrance, as well as for celebrating the freedoms that they fought to protect.
